Priyanka is a really smart girl

Priyanka studies at the Colaba study center run by Sahaara. She is a keen student who has always been eager to attend the study center. She is a smart student who has good grasping and recall skills. She knows numbers 1-10 and the alphabets as well. She is a sweet child who is sociable and loves to share things with other children. She also enjoys reading and writing exercises. To any first time visitor, Priyanka’s cheerful nature and skills in reciting numbers and alphabets belies her background and family’s utter poverty.

Children like Komal face educational deprivation in terms of generational illiteracy, physical access to education and quality of education as well. Though Komal hails from such a disadvantaged background, she can dream of a stable future with a good education because she studies at the Colaba study center, run by Sahaara. Being close to Komal’s house, the balwadi is a potent vehicle for transforming her future through quality education.
Sahaara’s balwadi has a systematic curriculum wherein children are equipped in the following subjects over the period of a year: English and Hindi: alphabets and poems, writing skills, general knowledge (colours, animals, flowers, personal hygiene etc), colouring, games and activities such as counting and recognition.
Komal is a live wire who is energetic and lively in class! She enjoys eating good food and is very talkative. She loves reading exercises. She is sociable and enjoys sharing her toys and things with other children!

Sania, the team player!

Five year old Sania lives in a slum community in Reay Road, Mumbai. Her father, Nazid Sheikh, is a taxi driver and her mother, Chandane, is a housewife. Sania has two siblings as well. The family is poor and struggles to make ends meet, and they find it very difficult to cope with medical emergencies. Despite their poor economic condition, Sania’s parents realize the value of a good education, and ensure that she goes to Sahaara’s balwadi every day.
Sania loves listening to stories and enjoys being part of group activities. She thoroughly enjoys physical activities like running and hopping. She has a pleasant demeanour. She is an all rounder. She is good at reading and writing exercises. She recites numbers from 1-10 and alphabets from A-Z with bubbling enthusiasm. She loves to do the actions whenever nursery rhymes are taught and also enjoys playing with her toys.
