Four year old Mustaq, hails from Govandi, one of the innumerable poverty stricken slum pockets in Mumbai. His father, Mustaq Ali Shaikh, works as a informal sector clothes-seller and his mother, Rabiya Banu, is a housewife, Mumtah has two siblings as well. Though his mother is illiterate and father has not studied beyond the eighth grade, Mumtah can dream of a stable future with a good education.
Mumtah studies at the Govandi study center, run by Sahaara. He is speech-impaired and hearing-impaired but his disabilities have not stopped him from interacting with other children through sign language. He is very active during playtime and very cheerful by nature! To any first time visitor, Mumtah’s smile, confidence while interacting with children would belie his background and family’s poverty.
Sahaara Charitable Society believes that every person has a dream, and their work centers around ensuring that marginalized persons are able to articulate and work towards achieving their dream.
